Questions about the SAC?

You need to know the 3 different views of the historians;

Firstly the Soviet/communist view that without Lenin there never would have been a revolution and that he instigated and lead the revolution on the behalf of the proletariat.

Secondly the western-liberal view which states that Lenin had little to do with the revolution which was largely caused by the war and lead by Trotsky. That Lenin and the communists were power hungry opportunists who got lucky in October 1917.

Thirdly the revisionist view which acknowledges the role of Lenin as leader, paticularly in the lead up to the revolution (revolution from above), but also acknowledges the will and demands of the masses who readily joined the revolution in Petrograd in 1917 because of appalling living and working conditions and the hunger and devastation brought on by the war. (revolution from below).

What we do know is that Lenin was key to providing the ideas behind the revolution he called for peace bread and land and all power to the soviets. This greatly appealed to all elements of the lower classes such as the soldiers, workers and peasants. He demanded from and convinced the Bolshevik central committee of the need for another revolution in 1917. It was Lenin who 'drove' the revolution along and who took control once revolution had been acheived in October 1917.

Use the A4 diagram/ handout which is printed in red and given out in class in the last week of term.

hope this answers your question German Beer Man!

In how much detail do we need to know the reasons why Russia entered the First World War

Just how the war helped to bring about (cause) revolution in february 1917 and october 1917.

In other words do not bother with why Russia entered the war for this SAC.

I found a good quote from Trotsky on a website that didn't give a reference or a date: "If we had had more time for discussion we should probably have made a great many more mistakes." I assume he's referring to the October 1917 Rev - has anyone else heard of it?
