Question:
Using your own knowledge and the representation, explain the message of the cartoon?
In 1905 revolution, the Tsar was notoriously named 'Nicholas the Bloody' for his violent reaction towards the peaceful working class demonstrators on 9th January 1905. Hence, we have the Tsar in the image being represented as a haunting skeletal figure.
As for the man holding the scroll, he symbolises the working class presenting the Tsar with a petition that pleads him to institute reforms to alleviate the 'excessive toil'--as stated in the petition. However, the man's good intention was rewarded with death. This clearly reflects the brutality unleashed by the 'Tsar' in the Bloody Sunday massacre and the shattered reverance for the Tsar as 'God's anointed'. As stated by Richard Malone, "the mystical union between the Tsar and his people are forever severed".
Furthermore,'Nicholas the Bloody' sits alone on his throne surrounded by symbols of Romanov royalty. This demonstrates he alone had to defend the tsarist regime. His lonesome and haughty figure foreshadows his eventual downfall in the 1917 revolution.
